Sofía Vergara was born to a Roman Catholic family in Barranquilla, her father, Julio Enrique Vergara Robayo, was a cattle rancher for the meat industry and her mother, Margarita Vergara de Vergara, was a homemaker. Sofía was nicknamed “Toti” by her five siblings and many cousins.
She initially studied dentistry for three years at a university in Colombia but left two semesters away from her degree to chase opportunities in show business and modeling. She later moved to Miami, Florida, leaving behind the unrest in Colombia, where her brother (older) Rafael was murdered in 1998 during an attempt to kidnap him. Sofia Vergara began her career as a model after a photographer spotted her walking on a Colombian seaside and rapidly offered her work. However, coming from a very strict Catholic family, she was primarily concerned about accepting the offer and took approval from her teachers to work as a model.
She looked in a Pepsi commercial at the age of 17, aimed for the Latin American audience. At the age of 20, she began performing as a runway model in Bogota, Columbia. Sofia’s first major job on television was co-hosting the Univisión travel show, ‘Fuera de Serie’.
